The power of Beyoncé has brought me out of hiding ( I'm your deadbeat cousin *Kanye voice*). Apart from that, Beyoncé was honored this past week at the CFDA Awards with the Fashion Icon Award. As a person with a platinum membership to the Beyhive I was all ears and thoroughly pleased with her speech. The Queen Bey used this platform to call out the known racism & classism in the fashion industry stating, "Starting out in Destiny Child, high end labels didn't really want to dress four black, country, curvy, girls and we couldn't afford couture" She also noted the ability designers have to promote change, "... we have an opportunity to contribute to a society where any girl can look at a billboard or magazine cover and see her own reflection." The most noteworthy thing about this speech is that it was given in front of the most well known and powerful fashion contributors.

Everything Beyoncé stated my mother and I took heed of when we created ISM Chick. We know the struggles of being WOC in the fashion industry and the barriers set upon us. Speeches like this only motivates us to do great things and open up doors for other marginalized people. Check out Beyoncé's speech below.
